A Friendly Competition! St. Vincent's & St. Mary's

“Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” (Ps. 132:1).

On November 6, the 7th-12th grade boys of St. Mary’s Academy competed in some events against the boys of St. Vincent de Paul Academy, the SSPX school in Kansas City. The day started with all the boys attending a First Friday Solemn High Mass. In the sermon, the principal of the St. Mary’s Boys’ School spoke about the importance of keeping virtue, especially charity, throughout a competition of this sort. After Mass there were two Cross Country races - one for the junior high, the other for the high school boys - on the old St. Mary’s Golf Course. All the boys then returned to the campus auditorium for lunch, which included a generous spread of snacks, desserts, and drinks contributed by the families of the boys from St. Mary’s. Lunch was followed by a Chess competition, featuring each school’s top 14 players - 7 from the junior high, 7 from the high school. After Chess the boys were put onto mixed teams, with boys from each school collaborating on the same team, for a fun and light-hearted game of trivia. The day ended with the announcing of the winners for Cross Country and Chess (St. Mary’s took the majority of the awards) and a rosary walk to the cemetery for the poor souls. After the St. Vincent’s boys departed back to Kansas City, it was agreed by the faculty and students of both schools that it was a good day, and a day which will hopefully become an annual event.
